The vest that repels fire, wind, rain and quite a lot of time

Built from a Swiss material originally created for the elite military, the ‚100 Year Vest‘ seems to be more than just a piece of clothing.

Vollebak states that they ‚wanted to build one comfortable enough to spend the rest of your life in.‘ … and we are extremely willing to believe them, as there are quite a few good reasons for this superlative vest.

The vest is incredibly practical with 2 giant zipped pockets running down the sides of the vest from the shoulders to the waist, another 9 pockets layered over and around them, and 3 heavy-duty military belt tapes designed for carabiners, the vest carries as much gear as a backpack.

If you look at the material, it’s actually made of three separate layers sandwiched together and performing three distinct roles. The outer layer is a stretchy, windproof soft shell. The middle layer is a fireproof coating and acts like an airbag in a fire. This layer instantly expands to 1000x its size to create a protective barrier. It might sound like an airbag, but it looks more like tiny plants growing at high speed to about 6mm in height.

And finally, the bottom layer next to your skin is a soft, knitted fireproof fibre that feels like cotton. It’s all quite impressive, but it also simply looks pretty good and should suit us whether we’re out in the wilderness for the weekend or suddenly have to deal with the end of the world – just roll with it.
