A true 50s Laverne Design Icon
The Champagne Chairs by Estelle & Erwine Laverne
A chair design with such a modern feel that you might think it’s from the 80s or later, but in fact these wonderful objects are straight out of the 50s. The “Champagne Chair” – designed by Estelle and Erwine Laverne in 1957 – was part of their “Invisibles” group, a collection of organically shaped seating furniture made of acrylic. The translucent effect of this innovative material helped them to develop furniture with a completely different spatial effect and lightness.
The Lavernes, a true mid-century modern couple, were artists who designed hand-painted wallpaper, furniture and fabrics. They furnished the lobby of the General Motors Tech Centre in Warren, Michigan, designed by Eero Saarinen and Harley Earl (and featuring many iconic mid-century modern works by Charles & Ray Eames, Finn Juhl, Harry Bertoia and others).
