One of the deepest, most versatile and exciting records by Ramsey Lewis. The Charles Stepney arrangements are full of power and uniqueness, the term ‘augmented by strings and voices‘ is a very accurate description.
Tracks like Mr. Hancock’s Maiden Voyage and Ode have a timeless beauty and make the record a special listening experience again and again: The Stepney-typical choirs (probably with Minnie Riperton), the drums of Maurice White, who later would write funk history with Earth, Wind & Fire, and the always sparkling, this time not only groovy but mysterious piano playing of Mr. Lewis.
