Jimmy Smith at the “Baby Grand”

Jimmy Smith at the “Baby Grand”

I found this beautiful 1956 Lexington Blue Note record at highly recommended Blue Sun in Brooklyn, earlier this year. The music and performance of Jimmy Smith at Club “Baby Grand” in Wilmington, Delaware, is nothing short of exceptional. The legendary jazz musician took the stage with an energy that was palpable, delivering cascading notes and breathless detours that left the audience astounded.

While his studio work is typically more structured, this live set showcased him in his natural habitat, performing in a small club where he could truly let loose. Bailey and Schwartz were also present, but they were no match for Jimmy’s virtuosic playing style. This was Smith’s show all the way, and he owned it from start to finish. It’s clear that his influence on the jazz scene cannot be overstated, and his performances at Club “Baby Grand” helped to establish him as one of the greatest jazz organists of all time.
