Hal Singer – Blues and News

A remarkable record in my collection, not only because of the wonderful music. And it is indeed fantastic. Mister Singer has left a hit with ‘Malcolm X’ in a Spiritual Jazz version that is also compatible for Jazz dancefloors.

But also remarkable is the very well attuned line-up: Hal Singer settled near Paris in 1965, which is why his combo is made up of partly half-German Frenchmen who are naturally not so well-known in the Jazz world as the pianist-flutist Siegfried Kessler.

Astonishing is also the release on the French independent label Futura, which has released some more pearls under the label Futura Swing (among others by Freddie Redd). In general: French Jazz labels – almost always worth listening to.

But most of all I’m happy that on the front cover you can find a signed dedication from Mr. Singer himself. When I bought the record years ago in a small record store in Marseille, I hadn’t noticed it at all. This enhances the musical enjoyment very clearly.
