Another wonderful album from Coltrane’s Atlantic period, here with a remarkable look at the next stage of evolution. All the tracks are from the ‘Naima’ phase and follow on from the epochal ‘Giant Steps’ (note to self: still missing in my collection).
Except for ‘Village Blues’: Here we hear McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones for the first time, together with Steve Davis on bass, a friend of Coltrane, married to Tyner’s sister-in-law.
Mr. Davis was part of the group for only a few months, his successor Jimmy Garrison was to complete the legendary quartet that later shook the Jazz world.
