Eddie Harris – The Electrifying Eddie Harris
Eddie Harris – The Electrifying Eddie Harris
‚No one sounds quite like him. Some have tried, but his imitators have the sound of exactly that – imitation. Harris is alone.‘ Nothing could be more true. Eddie Harris can be heard immediately, be it classical on the tenor saxophone or on the electronically amplified Varitone. But not only the idiosyncratic sound, the interpretations of mainstream melodies or the improvisation lines that are always full of blues grooves can always be identified.
Also the compositions of Mr. Harris are so unique, so full of style and sophistication – you know it right away that it is Eddie Harris when you hear it. So also on this record – ‘Listen here’ is of course the absolute classic with trademark sound and an ever pulsating beat, there is Blues on ‚I don’t want no one but you‚, also more experimental sounds on ‘Spanish bull’.
My absolute favourite track, however, is ‘Sham time‘: this not-from-this-world thing grooves so damn forward, the brass hits you in the legs from all sides, the arrangements are both elegant and dirty at the same time, the interaction between soloist and band is sensational – an always crazy ride that makes me forever look for a dancefloor. Even where there is none.
