Billy Cobham – Total Eclipse
Billy Cobham – Total Eclipse
Billy Cobham still is one of the best drummers in the world. It is clear that he is not exclusively located in purist jazz. The albums under his own name are always fusion, have rock elements, Latin rhythm, often and in unusual, surprising passages beautiful melodies.
But despite all crossover qualities they are never shallow or easy to consume throughout, they always have tension, powerful improvisation, up to aggressive moments, which one is used to from free jazz. So is ‘Total Eclipse’ – an insanely versatile album, with insanely savvy musicians like John Abercrombie or the Brecker Brothers, production that keeps you attentive the entire playing time, pretty to exciting melodic arcs, and the high-intensity-workout drumming style of Mr. Cobham. Always worth listening to.
