Yusef Lateef – The Golden Flute
Yusef Lateef – The Golden Flute
Yusef Lateef has always been at the forefront of inventiveness and overcoming boundaries in Jazz. Not only as an ingenious instrumentalist on flute and the seldomly heard oboe, but also on totally unusual instruments like arghul and shanai.
‚The Golden Flute’ is perhaps one of the first consistent concept albums that can be called true Retro. Just as there are regular 80s or 90s retro revivals nowadays, on this record Mr. Lateef devoted himself to the decade of the 40s.
In 1966, already a man in his 40s himself, he interprets the past from the perspective of the present – truly exciting, highly virtuoso, developing the spirit of a decade that brought a then radical music called Bebop and also myriads of wonderful melodies as played in ‚Exactly like you‘. Lovely album.
