Herbie Hancock – MWANDISHI

Herbie Hancock – MWANDISHI

The ninth album under his name shows Herbie Hancock with his sextet on his way to new shores, not moving away but moving on from a more traditional jazz plateau. On the three tracks the spirit of the Jazz-Funk-Fusion supergroup of the later Headhunters already shows up, however more cautiously, meandering, more spiritually, more appealing to the head than to the feet.

Mr. Hancock shows himself very virtuosic on the Fender Rhodes, not only in a playful skill on the keys, but especially in exploring the sounds towards new sonic layers. And although one person is on the record as the sender, I hear the sextet as a single entity, without hierarchies. The compositions and a lot of time help to give enough space to all exceptional musicians like Buster Williams or Eddie Henderson. Fantastic record.
